The Two best free playgrounds in Mexico City

Mexico City is a massive labyrinth of color, culture and diversity.  It is, perhaps, the most iconic Latin American city in terms of art and design, so it’s no surprise that the city’s playgrounds reflect its innovative approach.

The two public playgrounds featured below are, in our opinion, the best examples of quality design in the city:

1. Parque infantil La Tapatía

The play areas in this park are separated according to age and height. There are three sections: a general area for kids aged 2 to 12, and two additional areas for kids aged 2 to 5 and 5 to 12, respectively. All play areas are accessible and inclusive, with basic elements designed to accommodate wheelchairs and different levels of ability. Fun, comfort and safety are clearly the driving forces behind all three areas of La Tapatía.

The park’s equipment is high-quality, with a clear focus on safety and bright color. Thirteen different playsets are arranged throughout the park, all using a variety of materials and textures, and all located on rubberized surfaces to minimize the risk of injury.

The playgrounds are located in the Chapultepec Forest, near the Lago Mayor and the Paseo de los Compositores (Composers’ Walk), in the Circuito Correr es Salud. The park itself is 8900m2, with a water-saving irrigation system, a wide variety of diverse plant life, and lighting generated by solar energy. All these elements combine to make this playground one of the most ecologically-sound and sustainable that we’ve visited so far.

2. Parque Lincoln

In the midst of Mexico City’s tall buildings, you’ll find Lincoln Park. This park is located in the south of Polanco, in the Delegación Miguel Hidalgo, Mexico City.  You’ll find the playgrounds on the west side of the park, next to the Angela Peralta Theater.

Swings, monkey bars, bridges and more than twenty slides make this park a fun place for kids to feel excited, happy and safe.

Food, pets and bicycles are not allowed in the park. Playsets are designed for children under 15, or those with different levels of ability. The playgrounds are open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The playground’s proximity to the park aviary and ponds (espejos de agua) mean that there are enough kid-friendly activities here for at least half a day.  The Lincoln Park playgrounds are modern and safe, with a rubberized surface for added protection. Amidst the big buildings and business of Mexico City, these playgrounds stands out as a colorful example of quality design. For adults, there’s WiFi and even a solar tree to charge a cell phone.
